The Shelburne Marine Terminal (SMT) is located within the public harbour of Shelburne Harbour, Nova Scotia which
is the third best natural harbour in the world. The channel, called Eastern Way, leading to the entrance of the Shelburne
Harbour is 800 meters wide with a minimum depth of 9 meters through its narrows. The Shelburne Harbour has safe anchorages
for vessels in 13 meters of water. The port is ice free and you do not require a pilot to enter the harbour.
The SMT was constructed in two phases: the first pier was built in 1958 and the second phase, the development
of the “T” shaped structure, was constructed in 1965. The stem section is approximately 130 meters long and 15
meters wide. The Tee section is approximately 163 meters in length and 20 meters wide and has light standards on its northern
edge. The depth at the wharf (surveyed in 2008 by CHS) 9.5m > 10.5 m.
The Shelburne Marine Terminal provides wharf and cargo handling facilities for a number of vessels carrying
diverse cargoes such as containers, bulk commodities and fish products. In addition to the handling of a number of vessels,
the SPA leases land and virtually all the western inner basin to Continental Seafoods (a subsidiary of Clearwater). This company
also uses the outer berth from time to time to service their vessels.
The SPA has a total land and water lot area of approximately 11 hectares. Along the western edge of the property
is a paved road that runs from the end of Lower Water Street toward the wharf and ending where the wharf begins. This approach
road is approximately 300 meters in length. Continental Seafoods located east of the approach road, leases a portion of land
from the SPA; the balance of the area east of the approach road and up to the wharf is mostly paved and used for parking,
marshalling and storage. The “T” shape of the wharf creates two inner basins: a deeper basin on the west (currently
leased to Clearwater) and a shallower basin on the east, currently used by independent fishers. Fresh water is available 8
months of the year, along with electrical hook up 30 amps, 50 amps and 100 amp service and WI-FI is also available. There
are security cameras providing around the clock surveillance of the terminal, along with security and RCMP presence; this
is also a Canada Customs access point.
The Terminal is within walking distance of historic Dock Street, Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club and the centre of Town; taxi
service is also available. There are a number of restaurants in town to choose from Chinese to Home cooked to Pizza; there
is also a Tim Horton’s.
